SAPI saves Lives

So by now you all know I'm a big supporter of the US Military. If you're not, feel free to return to France. One site I try to get to a few times a week is One Marine's View - link at the right. Capt B. tells it like it is and brings forward the good things that our beloved media seems to forget. Maybe I was knitting or maybe I was shopping, or heck, maybe I was asleep but did you see the story on the news about this Marine? This is Cpl Blair who's stationed in Iraq. He's not holding the door to a potbellied stove. That is the protective gear they're issued when they get to Iraq. I don't know the "lingo" used so I'm not sure what SAPI means but I know it's a heavy piece of gear and originally the Marines complained about the weight. Well, Cpl Blair won't. He was working a checkpoint when he was shot at and the only thing that saved his life was that little piece of armor. They have to wear it all day every day. So the next time you've gotta lug in heavy grocery bags, or that laundry basket feels like it's got cannon balls in it, stop and think of your soliders. Think of the Marine's like Cpl Blair. Lugging around a few extra pounds actually saved his life.

Donald wins regular season game

The Riverside Knights had their first regular season game against the Clinton Love Joy Lions on Saturday afternoon at 4:00. The temperature wasn't the only thing that was hot that day. Donald and his coaches led the team to a 41-13 victory. As it turns out, the Knights set the tone for the afternoon and evening. Following the little guys win, the Raiders, Mustangs and Rams all won their games. Looks like we're off to a great start. Take it one day at a time and we may very well take the Tyro Bowl. Wouldn't it be great to have all 4 of our teams go! Heck, if we're gonna get there, let's get there and win! Go Riverside!!!!!!!!

Rachel & Britt join JROTC

Ok, I don't know who gave these girls permission to grow up and go to high school but here they are. All set to join JROTC as freshman and they look GREAT!!! I'm so proud of them. Corrie even admitted to crying when she first saw them in uniform. I remember when they came home from the hospital. Born early their little heart monitors would go off all the time. Here are two great examples of what modern medicine can do. Two bright, happy and energetic girls who know JROTC gets you out of swim. LOL Good Luck girls! You look

FAB-YOU-LUSS!!!!!

Ali & Kat's Fender Bender

Ok, so, apparently landscaping hasn't made it's way into the deep south. Here's a picture of my cousins Ali & Kat's car. While trying to inch out around a corner they were hit head on. "Why didn't they see the oncoming car?" you may ask. Well the answer is quite simple. The redneck yahoo at the corner of their street has hedges that grow through and over their fence making it nearly impossible to see. Here's a tip for the homeowner..... spend less money on the big truck and satallite dish for your rusted out trailor and buy a hedge trimmer. The world will be a safer place. Here's h0ping they didn't breed. Glad you girls are OK!!!

Heeyyyyyy Luuuuuucccyyyy!!!!!

Ok, I couldn't resist putting this picture up on the site. Here's a picture of my cousin Nikki at a winery outside Austin. Talk about an experience! Remind me to find out which one she's at. I'll have to stay away from the 2006 vintage! LOL LOVE YA!!!!!!!

Our new porch

Well we finally did it. We helped dad put the last pieces of the railings up yesterday afternoon and the porch is finally finished. Doesn't it look great!!! Way to go dad. We got a system down and it took hardly any time at all. The best part is that it's vinyl coated composite so it'll last forever. After all that work it better! LOL

Coach Don & the Knight Kick Butt!!

This past Saturday, at 4:00 p.m., Donald & his Riverside Knights took the field at LaSalle Park vs the West Side Longhorns. The Longhorns are known for playing dirty. That didn't matter because in the end good won over evil. Yup! The final score was Knights 40- Westside 6. The ref's had to call the game to stop the humiliation. Congrats to Donald - a great brother and an all star coach - and to his little league footballers. Here's to a great start to the season. Keep up the good work one game at a time and we'll be cheering you on as you win the big trophy at the 2006 Tyro Bowl!!!!

Kevin's Safe & Sound

Hey everyone. Got an email from my friend Kevin today. He's as safe & sound as you can be in Iraq.

The Mojito!!

An icy mojito is summer's hottest treat8/9/2006
Bill Wippert/Buffalo NewsMojitos, regular and strawberry flavored, are ready to refresh, at Laughlin's Beef & Barrel on Franklin Street.
The hottest cold drink around this summer - the Mojito - originated in Cuba.
The Mojito (pronounced Mo HEE Toe) is a long summer slurp of white rum, mint and lime.
We were told (even by his competitors) that the guy to talk to about Mojitos is Pat Gilmartin, a veteran bartender who works at Laughlin's Beef & Barrel, 333 Franklin St. Turns out, the information was correct.
"My customers tell me I make the best Mojito in Buffalo," Gilmartin said. What's the secret? "First, having the proper ingredients, and second, taking the time to make it. It's a fussy drink." Gilmartin said he takes a rough-cut sugar cube ("It looks like a moth ball but it's better than granulated") and puts it on the bottom of a glass, then he adds mint leaves, saving a nice leaf for garnish. Sometimes, he adds a fresh strawberry.
Next comes a fresh lime wedge and 7UP. "I like the citric taste, but you can use simple syrup if you wish," he says. Then, he muddles. "I use the muddler behind the bar, which looks like a little brown baseball bat."
Next, the glass is filled with ice and a good shot of white rum, leaving a little room on top for a splash of lime juice and another little splash of 7UP.
Gilmartin shakes the whole thing "extensively to melt the sugar" and pours it into the serving glass, garnishing with the reserved lime sprig.
"It is," he says, "an eye-catching drink."
A note: Gilmartin estimates his Mojito is about two-thirds alcohol. "As my customers tell me, this is not a girlie drink."
Here's an approximation of his recipe:
Mojito
3 teaspoons sugar
Half a lime, cut in wedges
10 fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup fresh ice
11/2 ounces white rum
2 ounces 7UPPlace the sugar in a tall glass; add a lime wedge, then most of the 7UP, muddle to extract flavor. Top with remaining 7UP and the juice of another lime wedge.
Add the ice and the rum and shake extensively until the sugar melts. Serve in a tall glass, garnishing with mint and another lime wedge. Makes 1 serving.

14th Annual Day of Caring

Yesterday was our 14th annual Day of Caring. With 3,400 volunteers at a number of agencies made a great impact in the community this year. Here's a picture of Sean & Renita - 2 newbie's both to the U.W. and to D.O.C. I think I really made a good impression this year with my 2006 shirt. Yup, though I only made a few minor "changes" the shirt, the lace for sleeves & collar were a nice touch but the scrapbook on the back was an instant hit. Of course the fact that I had Barbara Streisand singing "The Way We Were" from a hidden recorder might have been what put me over the top! LOL Yes, that's right. This year I was musical. What does one do to top that next year? I'm not sure but you can bet I'm already working on it. Hmm..... wonder if Channel 2 has an extra monitor they're not using! LOL There's too many pictures to put them all up here so send me an email and I'll send them right over to you. There were 3389 volunteers from 162 companies working on 177 projects benefiting 120 agencies totaling over $244,000. Enjoy & have a GREAT day!!

Big Boy Brandon

Brandon started kindergarten yesterday at a new school in South Austin. Doesn't he look like a little executive??

Interesting find in Ireland

Every once in a while I get a chance to check out a few of the other blogs that I've got links for on my own site. DadManly is a great site that gives you real insight into what's going on. While checking it out this morning, I came across this article. It really makes you think. - J

Israel and Whirling Dust
Associated Press reports a stunning find of ancient Biblical texts in an Ireland bog:

DUBLIN, Ireland - Irish archaeologists Tuesday heralded the discovery of an ancient book of psalms by a construction worker who spotted something while driving the shovel of his backhoe into a bog.
(snip)

"This is really a miracle find," said Pat Wallace, director of the National Museum of Ireland, which has the book stored in refrigeration and facing years of painstaking analysis before being put on public display.
"There's two sets of odds that make this discovery really way out. First of all, it's unlikely that something this fragile could survive buried in a bog at all, and then for it to be unearthed and spotted before it was destroyed is incalculably more amazing."
He said an engineer was digging up bogland last week to create commercial potting soil somewhere in Ireland's midlands when, "just beyond the bucket of his bulldozer, he spotted something."
(snip)

The book was found open to a page describing, in Latin script, Psalm 83, in which God hears complaints of other nations' attempts to wipe out the name of Israel.
Okay, for those of you who wouldn’t otherwise research the source, Psalm 83, New King James (courtesy of BibleGateway.com):

1 Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, And do not be still, O God!
2 For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; And those who hate You have lifted up their head.
3 They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
4 They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”
5 For they have consulted together with one consent; They form a confederacy against You:
6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites;
7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assyria also has joined with them; They have helped the children of Lot. Selah
9 Deal with them as with Midian, As with Sisera, As with Jabin at the Brook Kishon,
10 Who perished at En Dor, Who became as refuse on the earth.
11 Make their nobles like Oreb and like Zeeb, Yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 Who said, “Let us take for ourselves The pastures of God for a possession.”
13 O my God, make them like the whirling dust, Like the chaff before the wind!
14 As the fire burns the woods, And as the flame sets the mountains on fire,
15 So pursue them with Your tempest, And frighten them with Your storm.
16 Fill their faces with shame, That they may seek Your name, O LORD.
17 Let them be confounded and dismayed forever; Yes, let them be put to shame and perish,
18 That they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth.

I just want to point out for those not familiar, the place names and peoples referred to in verses 6-8 bear historical connection to a great many of Israel’s current enemies.
Hezbollah enjoys first class and insider access to Washington Post columnists (well, at least one). But if informed commentary has it right, that Iran’s proxies desperate, then it may well be that Hezbollah indeed find themselves “like the whirling dust, like the chaff before the wind.”

My first appointment at the gym....

Yesterday was my first appointment at the gym. Kimberlee was GREAT!! She didn't try to rush me through, she didn't give me things to do and leave me hanging or try to throw me into the weight room. She told me that the lesser used weight room upstairs is just as good as it has 1 of everything. She's a pilates teacher so we're going to go more in that route. Too bad class is at 12:15. Maybe I can take a 1/2 PTO one day and check it out. We actually spent about an hour together getting my measurements. After I got home I had dinner, got my August pass, then jumped in the pool for a couple hours with mom & Kari. I'm supposed to have my 2nd appointment with Kim today at 5:00 but depending on how I feel and how the weather is, I might re-schedule and just hit the pool. I really worked my arms in there last night. I laid over the noodle, let my legs float and just used my arms for the breast stroke. The underside of my arms really felt it. One thing Kim stressed was using a Yoga ball. I've always wanted to try one of these but feared I was too fat. Not so! says Kim. We're going back to my dance roots which is gonna be great. Stay tuned!!
